REEF RISING
An ode to Australia’s coral reefs, this 3D printed wearable sculpture was ‘grown’ using complex visual programming to form over 10,000 unique coral cells. Reflecting on coral lost to degradation, bleaching and cyclonic impact, Reef Rising celebrates conservation efforts to restore these ecosystems. A beacon of hope for a future in which our enchanting reefs thrive once more.
Reef Rising features a 3D printed biopolymer coral shell centrepiece with matching coral crown headdress. A 3D printed textile completes the ensemble: biopolymer coral cells suspended in sheer organza enveloping the torso as if growing from skin; flowing down the legs to form a pool of coral cells trailing behind. A multi-sensory delight, the delicate coral textile emulates the sound of seashells clinking underfoot at the beach.
"Another personal favourite was the breathtaking Reef Rising entry by architects Suzy Syme and Andrew Costa, which was awarded Runner Up for the Avant-Garde category, celebrating the collaboration between art, science and technology. An ode to Australia’s coral reefs and the danger they face from degradation and bleaching, this 3D-printed wearable sculpture and headpiece was created using complex visual programming to form over 10,000 unique coral cells, and had an ethereal, melancholy vibe as the model swayed down the catwalk to the rhythm of the waves."
